The .com domain name is, without a doubt, a top-level domain. Over the years, many domain names such as .net or .tv have popped up. Yet, none have reached the level of exposure a .com domain has. Whenever you think of a website, you probably attach a “.com” at the end without thinking twice about it.

What to do if the .com Domain name isn’t available?

Much like choosing the business name, choosing the domain name can also be a hassle. Sometimes it just doesn’t sound right, and other times, it’s taken. Here are some tips if you’re struggling with the latter.

Try other Domains

While .com has undeniably become one of the most common domain names, the World Wide Web is not limited to just that! Research into some other top-level domains such as .net, .org, or .us. Try comparing them with your initially proposed domain name, and see what fits best!

Look for Synonyms

If you intend to keep a .com domain name, no matter what, try looking up synonyms for your current name. Make a list of alternatives you can find that sound or look similar to the original word.

Extend your brand name

If the domain name you want is taken, try extending the URL. Make sure you are choosing words that are relevant to your company’s niche. Take Tesla as an example. It was initially known as TeslaMotors.com. Take a page out of their book, and do something similar with your URL!

Experiment with hyphens

Alternatively, try using hyphens. However, be sure to do some market research first - people have a mixed relationship with hyphens, and the last thing you want is for your potential target audience to hate hyphens.

Try abbreviations

Abbreviating your domain name isn’t the most recommended way to go about it. However, it’s still worth a shot! Try shortening the words that aren’t present in the actual brand name. Otherwise, it’ll be too difficult for your potential customers to look your website up!

Brainstorm a new name

When you have the perfect domain name in your mind, this idea can seem like an unsatisfactory escape route. However, you never know what alternative you’re going to come up with. Maybe it’ll be better than anything you’ve thought up before. If you’ve exhausted all other options, sit down and brainstorm - how can I make this name better? You might surprise yourself with the results.

Try to purchase it

Buying your preferred domain name is a last desperate attempt to keep the name you’ve dreamed of. Your dream domain name doesn’t always have to be active. Look it up and check if it’s up for sale. The downside to this method is the costs, which a startup might not cover, so keep it as a last resort.

Lastly, it is crucial to keep in mind that even though .com domain names are the most popular, other domain names are gaining traction. Make sure you do thorough research on the topic, take our considerations into account, and devise the perfect domain name for your brand!
